"Dragoon" is a legitimate word from military history in Europe. Originally it referred to mounted musketeers, who would move to, or around, a battlefield on horseback but dismount to fight.
Later the term was used for a class of heavy cavalry, who wore the cuirass, an armor that protected the front and back of the chest against sword and bayonet. (It could sometimes protect against musket balls but never against cannon.)
