Today's haul of anime

Just a quick recap of what I've been watching over the last couple of days. Hayate no Gotoku 12, Claymore 12, Gurren Lagann 12, Lucky Star 11. Bored and the rum hasn't kicked in yet. ;p Spoilers after the break.

Hayate's looking good - they're obviously going with the school storyline, which comes (I'm told) from parts of the manga not yet translated over here. Humor potential, and we finally got to see Hayate's old friend from school do something besides eat constantly. I don't really trust the animators for full-original work (ep 10 was pretty terrible), but what can you say? Concept hasn't worn thin, and the not-very-tsun/heavy-dere Nagi is a nice break from the angry-for-no-reason crowd.

Claymore is scratching the same itch that Berserk did - i.e. shows heavy on things getting cut up and with a little dark drama. Interesting, the lengths to which Clare's superiors will go to kill her off...

Gurren Lagann has a chick ep, getting Nia and Yoko to clear the air. Good in that being bitchy was all that's defining Yoko's character these days. Bad in that now that the air's clear, what DOES define Yoko's character? The show disappoints in characterization for the secondary characters, though... okay, you're going to do a beach episode, you take the three shapely sisters of the would-be commander and put them in swimsuits, then you put Yoko and Nia in a swimsuit and suddenly none of the horndogs are interested in the first three girls? Come on, Yoko's more covered up than normal and Nia's about as developed as a fresh roll of film. Of course, I guess if I don't remember enough about the girls to keep their names straight, neither do the writers... Ah, well. Nobody's watching this show for the girls, they're watching for the robots and the drills, and for Simon to become an amazing badass, so let's have amazing badassery and robots and drills already.

Lucky Star... well, if you're in the show this far, you're going to keep going all the way, probably. ;p Kind of a nondescript ep, Christmas focus (June!), lots of Santa jokes. Konata makes for a cute Santa. Cute, but not gut-bustingly hilarious, overall. Still no sign of the crowd of classmates from the opening, though Konata's dad gets a good amount of screen time. He's definitely playing the Kimura role, but not in a "zomg pedopedo" way - just an oddball, and definitely an enabler for his oddball daughter Konata.

Still no sign of Nanoha Strikers ep 10 subtitles. I swear, had I access to a translator interested in the show, I'd be tempted to break my rule of "do not subtitle things for free". Ah well, spoilers for episodes 10-12 indicate that things are improving significantly, so I can be patient...

This weekend's likely to be the end of Soul Hunter and then some Kenshin TV, at co-worker request. I'll start in on Nanoha A's sometime soon too...

1 I noticed that Shiraishi keeps upstaging Akira (e.g. his rant was groundshaking in some ways, and he was in fact on the show for the longest time). I have to admit, my curiosity is piqued. The expectation is of course for him to continue doing it when she shows up in the show.

2 Heh... Lucky Channel is very funny for me - it's a lot like sitting around and shooting the bull back at the company. (No long-sleeved loli, alas. But we got by without.)
