Saimoe update 9/30

Well, good god. Calling yesterday's voting "heavy" doesn't do it justice - more like "unprecedented". Only one round last year had this kind of voting volume, and it was the final.

Suigintou pulled ahead of Fate, in a match that remained neck and neck until the last hour of voting; obviously a successful push for votes at the last minute succeeded. And in the other round, in a completely unexpected upset, Eruru inched just in front of Ayu for a 37-vote victory, with both pulling in more than 1100 votes. Nobody has to go home feeling bad, as it were - only Kagami pulled in similar vote totals to Ayu in this round, and nobody was even in Fate's neighborhood except Suigintou. But it's obvious that there are relatively more observers than we thought, who were willing to come in on a hotly-contested round; if we see a similar effect for the big rounds in the future, it'll be hard indeed to predict winners based on past performance. (But exciting!)

Also makes me glad I have Utawarerumono sitting on the desk waiting to be watched. Obviously there's some moe in there I have not yet discovered...

After yesterday's elimination of Ayu, Sayuri should have a relatively easy ride in G2-2. Up against two Aria characters, she has a voting advantage and a split advantage; making it even worse is that there's no obvious winner between Akari or Alice, so the Aria vote is probably going to split fairly evenly. That would make Sayuri the only character from Kanon to advance to the third round (though Mai is up tomorrow, she's also up against Louise...)

The factors that will make Aria characters lose G2-2 will probably make them win H2-2. Sure, Misaki and Shamal aren't the formidable competition that Sayuri is. But instead of splitting the Aria vote, which already has an advantage, Alicia will get the synergy from both of the competitors in the other round. Of course, as the winner's up against Suigintou anyway, maybe taking an early exit in this round is the way to go.

1 Who would have figured that a girl with animal ears (dog ears, aren't they?) would knock off a top character from Kanon? A latent furry voting bloc?

2 Actually, looking at a picture, they can't be dog ears. They're pointed and they hang down; all dog ears that hang down are round on the end. All pointed ears stick up.

3 1. revenge vote (Nanoha Legion)
2. tactical vote (Rozen Maiden)
3. Anti-key vote (2ch)

4 Five words, "The Maidens are going D-O-W-N."

5 Well, Eruru did make it to the quarterfinal last year. Sure, weak block, but she's got some fans out there, it seems. (That and there is a significant anti-Key faction, and also a huge number of voters in the other block without any real attachment to any of the three in that block - in which case, why not take out a Kanon character with the loose vote?) Even then, damned close thing.

And yeah, there's an awful lot of Nanoha folks voting that day, and Ayu did bump off Rein Zwei.

Can't see how the Rozens would be involved, though. None of them in block G, and it's not like taking out Ayu makes it any easier to get past Mai with Suigintou (that is to say, it's as easy as it ever was).

Be interesting how these results stir up the rest of the bracket. Nanoha fans are running out of characters - assuming Shamal is road kill today, that leaves Nanoha and Vita in C and Hayate in D. The Nanoha fans need all the help they can get to surpass Luna, but if they do that, someone (almost certainly Nanoha) will make it out of C. Hayate's only chance is as a spoiler - it would take a lot of anti-Lucky Star voting to put her up over Kagami, but that's not impossible.

The Rozen team is in relatively better position. Between Sui and Sou, someone will win that block; Shinku has at least a fighting chance; and if Suigintou can put that kind of performance together consistently, nothing's going to stop her either. If anything, they may suffer from being too successful at this point - nobody wants Suiseiseki to win it again, that's for sure.

6 "Can't see how the Rozens would be involved"

in your own words

in which case, why not take out a Kanon character with the loose vote?

Not say Eruru doesn't have her own fanbase but she was the weakest of the final 8 last year and didn't this kind of pulling the enitre time.

"Between Sui and Sou, someone will win that block"

boku is already fish food.

Desu won't make it past San or blasmac vinagar. too much revenge voting form last year.

Only hope left for the Legion is Nanoha.

7 Someone must, or they wouldn't be voting for her.

Well, I'll be... I never noticed that!

But, um, Steven?  It's anime.  If they want a cute girl to have pointed dog ears that hang down, then they can.  Heh.

I'm amazed that Eruru beat Ayu, but I can see it.  Her reaction to having her tail touched is one of the greatest things I've ever seen.

9 I was thinking about it some more. They're goat ears. That's what the ears look like on some kinds of goats. Or else they're just generic animal ears and not intended to look like something specific.

10 The biggest difference is that the men and women don't have the same ears.

The ears on men point up like a bat, and aren't particularly furry-looking except at the tips, the same color as the person's flesh - they'd pass for elf ears, almost. But women's ears are all downward-pointing and much furrier, so there's no mistaking them for a type of elf ear.

Except for kids, who I seem to recall all having the furry ears regardless of gender.

The tails are interesting too, much more pronounced on the women (though you don't see many shots of guys where you'd see a tail in the first place.)

The show has at least some people with normal human appearance, and others who affect it - one of the standard male items of clothing is a headband with cloth hanging down to cover each ear. Not all of them wear it, but enough do to make me wonder if it's not an attempt to cover 'em up, a social status thing or something... which would explain why they're prepared to treat Hakuoro as if he were a noble, I suppose.

At any rate, Eluluu has very pronounced ears, and hers are a lot more mobile (or rather, we see a lot of her in situations where they would be.) Pretty moe all told. I don't know that I'd say she's better than Ayu, but she's got enough.
