Saimoe update 8/10

Voting went as predicted yesterday - Kanaria winning with a fairly slim margin over Anya, Nagi absolutely crushing the competition with a whopping 1100 votes, and Miki from Hayate enjoying a lot of pro-Hayate votes to take the win. Pretty satisfying overall.

Last day of voting in the first round for block A. A-4 should go Tenma, assuming School Rumble hasn't slipped too far off the radar. Idolmaster's not quite popular enough, and Izumi is a very secondary Hayate character, so neither of them should be able to knock Tenma out of the voting. (Last year, both the Tsukamoto sisters and Eri did quite well...)

A-8 is a popular character from an otaku-oriented show versus a popular character from Detective Conan, which has been running for... well, a very, very long time, heh. Gotta give the win to Yukino, 'cause the mainstream doesn't vote in this thing. Yukari doesn't make as good of a proxy-Shana as, say, Kanata and Konata.

Dunno how to call A-12, honestly. I expect nothing from the My-Otome crowd after last year's massacre in the early rounds - haven't heard anything about the new season that would have increased its support any. But she's up against a character from an even weaker show, and Ayano from Lucky Star, who is only really notable because she's the classmate of Kagami who isn't the fang girl. (She did get some lines and screen time in last week's episode, though, so maybe that's enough?) All three of these characters barely squeaked in through the second prelim, so it's not like any of them have major support (or for that matter, a snowball's chance in hell against Nagi in the second round...)

1 Yeah, I think you hit the key point at the end there - it doesn't really matter who wins because none of them have the popularity to go toe to toe with a top-tier character like Nagi, especially considering yesterday's showing.  The real question is will we be able to have a Nagi vs. Shana showdown for the Group A finals?

2 Well, as things go, we don't want to have people "surrendering to the inevitable" too early. There are very few characters who, however moe, won't encounter stiff competition, at least by the block finals. Most of the "sure thing" characters are ones from shows that have been very popular and successful in past Saimoe events; thus there's a significant faction of people opposed to their success. Nobody's invulnerable to a pretty strong opponent plus a bunch of organized revenge voting or tactical voting.

That said, it's one thing to say "any given Sunday" and another thing for it to actually happen. We talk about tactical voting, but organizing anime fans is like trying to herd cats... angry, surly cats. Only a fraction of the fans are going to be obsessive enough to try to kick out characters they don't like, as opposed to advancing ones that they do like - and even fewer are going to oppose characters that they like a little, but who pose a threat to characters they like more.

The success of the anti-Haruhi (the person, not the show) faction last year rested not on people's opposition to the show's success per se, though that was certainly an element. It was the fact that a lot of fans don't like Haruhi personally. There were lots of comments to the effect that she was little better than a rapist (do we hear some envy in your voice, Kyon?) Haruhi lost not because a lot of people got together and said "Melancholy must be eliminated from the tournament at all costs", but because a lot of people said "oh god, anybody but Haruhi!"

Suiseiseki suffers from some of this too, but she's that much more popular to start with. Nanoha and Fate have practically no personal anti-faction - there's not much to hate about the characters even if the show leaves you cold, assuming you don't have an objection to little girls growing up...

And, of course, a lot of these shows are still running. There's plenty of room for a minor character's popularity to take off between today and late October! Ayumu from Hayate, for example, went from "classmate who's eating for no good reason" to "love rival with totemic hamster" and gained significant amounts of moe instantly.

Yeah, with 290 characters starting the tournament, not all the matches are going to be titanic struggles between incarnations of moe itself. Such is life. They still have some value for me personally - if a show is popular enough to advance somebody I don't know at all into a later round, my chances of going out and watching some increase significantly. I'm definitely watching Seto, for example, because I noted the characters in it were doing well in the prelims; I'll probably get around to Nagasarete for the same reason. (Doesn't always work - Hidamari Sketch was fine except for the freakish character designs that physically pained me to watch - but what can you do?)
