Saimoe results 7/20, prelim 7/21
Souseiseki handily wins yesterday's round. A surprisingly strong showing from Sakuya from Hayate - she's pretty minor to be getting that many votes, which suggests a strong push behind the series as a whole. Misaki from NHK comes in seventh, and there's actually a Crescent Love character in fifth - rejoice, Wonderduck! You're not the only one. ;p
Bell comes in a distant 17th, so we'll see how that turns out in the second prelim. Also notable there are Natsumi from Keroro, Sarah from School Rumble, and the day's two Negima girls. (Practically every one of them is coming in high enough to make it to the second prelim round... could get ugly depending on how they get sorted out.)
Today's round is just going to be a brawl - it's day of the tsunderes. Kagami from Lucky Star, Vita the eternal lolita from StrikerS, Tokiko from Busou Renkin... and the more-or-less polar opposite, Nodoka from Negima. (Yeah, yeah, I was raised by a school librarian, 'kay?) I wouldn't be surprised by a strong showing from Arisa from StrikerS - another photo-only entrant, but one that's definitely more popular with the fans than her role would seem to account for. Lots of "Burning Arisa" fanart, anyway... wonder how that meme got started?

Another interesting thing: a couple of characters from "Kaleido Star Good dayo! GOOOOD!" have qualified. Rosetta today, and Layla Hamilton a couple of days ago. That's the special that was computer rendered, with all the characters being chibis.
Okay, this is just silly. If it's the one I'm thinking of, she's onscreen ONCE, for maybe 45 seconds, tops. Says a couple of lines, reveals one plot point, then boogies off to class, never to be seen again. She's not even credited by the show, for heaven's sake.
If there's any justice, she'll get negative votes. More likely, there's some weird cult-like fanclub around this schoolgirl that'll get her into the next round.

Duck, so far we've had Konata's mom walk off with a top eight finish, and she only appears in a photograph, has no lines, and is only notable for her resemblance to Konata. I mean, Arf and Suzuka from Nanoha at least have appearances in -previous- seasons, if not more than the absolute bare minimum to qualify the character.
That's why they have the first prelim round. Everybody knows that the majority of these characters have no chance whatsoever. There's 90 year old grandmothers, big butch women, little babies, basically every named female character in every show for those 12 months, plus a few that didn't even GET a name and had to be described as "the girl who held up a sign in this episode". The only thing you have to be is human-or-looks-like-one and female (and this represents a restriction over last year's tourney, where a horse and Nanoha's staff both made it to the main bracket!) I have no doubt that some Japanese guys sat down and nominated, literally, every female thing they could find in every show they could lay their hands on, just to be jerks. ;p
But obviously, if they did a bracket containing 3000 women, it'd take forever and be super-boring. So they spend the first month or so in two prelim rounds - the first to separate the characters into definitely in, and definitely out, piles, and the second to winnow through the ones that have enough support to get past "definitely out" but not enough to be "definitely in" during the first round. (It also gives them some insurance against popular characters being eliminated immediately due to an unusually tough bracket.)
This early on, people aren't thinking in terms of moe, really - more like "okay, I like these characters". You get to vote for ten per round, after all, so it's not like you have to be restrictive in your choices; you have to have watched a hell of a lot of this year's anime to come up with ten solid candidates plus ones you're not sure about. I don't think I've actually voted all ten once, though to be fair I haven't personally voted in half the rounds...
The second prelim will be quite interesting, mostly because all the characters are compressed into a smaller support band - the huge marquee characters already qualified, and all the no-hopers are gone, so there's no telling who'll actually take the votes each round. In comparison, the first actual round of competition is usually a bloodbath, as characters that just squeaked in are matched up against characters with a legion (or at least a few maniples, heh) of fans.
