Saimoe results 7/19, prelim 7/20
No real shocks this round, save Kuuya doing so well - definitely not an Utawarerumono character that people talk about, so we can probably conclude some halo-effect action here. Isumi is surprisingly moe. And we have a Marimite character in the top eight... they haven't been racking up high vote totals so far.
Belldandy is up today, but for some reason she never does that well in these. So is Souseiseki, who does, even if she tends to play second banana to her twin sister. (Well, when you act like a boy...) It'll be interesting to see where Misaki from NHK places, kind of a measure of the power of self-loathing moe? Sakuya from Hayate isn't quite as moe as Isumi, but she has the power of manzai comedy... probably too much of that power, come to think of it. There's a few outside shots (Chizuru and Ku Fei from Negima, Sarah from School Rumble, some Strawberry Panic and Hidamari characters...)

I think one of the reasons Belldandy won't do well is that she isn't drawn neotenized. She's beautiful, not cute. It's not the same esthetic.
I wouldn't tend to think that Urd would do well, either. Skuld, on the other hand...

Sure and you're right by that - especially in a tournament where cuteness has a decisive advantage over sexy. (Contrast the Nanoha main cast - not the lolita entries anymore, but their character designs still retained most of the "cute", and none of them are drop-dead gorgeous. Still doing well...)
Could also be age - not character age, but fan age. AMG's been around for a long, long time. Even in the category of "anime that doesn't really worry about plot advancement and just tells heartwarming stories", it's not really top banana anymore (Aria claimed that crown last year, I think...) There's no payoff for new fans, and not really any payoff for old fans either - it will be a cold day in hell before anything significant actually happens in that relationship. I stopped buying the manga a couple of years ago - the way I felt was, okay, it's a nice story, but there's plenty of other titles out there that have stories that aren't just nice, but actually go somewhere!
You know, there's a good bit in common between Aoi Yori Aoshi and AMG, if you think about it...
