Good news, cont.

My upcoming subtitling projects are going well so far. Can't share a whole lot of details, but I've been explicitly authorized to say that (a) they are the first two seasons of Nanoha, and the first season of Zero no Tsukaima, and (b) yes, despite the recent news about Geneon, they're really being worked on and really haven't been canceled. You may commence rejoicing.

1 Which, of course, makes me wonder if there's already a replacement licensee, your actual employer. But I would not expect you "to confirm or deny".

2 Learned not to confirm/deny in the office of the master, heh.

Well, it's nice to hear that everything's coming along fine, even with Geneon's current situation.

By the way, is it possible that you can give us periodic updates every few weeks or so on how the subbing is going along for those two shows? You know, to give us reassurance that Geneon intends to release them one way or another?

4 Sure, had planned to anyway.

Note that I can't speak for the production end of it. I know work's proceeding on the show, I know it's being dubbed, I know they're working under a pretty quick deadline... but I don't know any details of where it'll go after that. I mean, I'm assuming that it's going to come out, because nobody pays for subtitles that they don't plan to use. But I don't have any actual knowledge here.

5 It's great that Geneon's still working on projects even in what they're going through now! Don't give up Geneon! I love your shows (mostly Shounen Onmyouji, my all-time favorite) that you licensed and I hope things go well for you.

6 Got bad news for you: all the Shonen Onmyoji DVDs beginning with #3 are cancelled.

Posted by: Steven Den Beste at October 21, 2007 04:06 PM (+rSRq)

7 Not necessarily conclusive. We know that Geneon's not continuing distribution activities, so all the stuff they had on the schedule won't be distributed - which is "cancelled" to the retailers, but not necessarily indicative of being cancelled by the producers. (Then again, it could be.)

8 Nooooo...I love Shounen Onmyouji...uwaaa...

Certainly it's possible that someone else will pick up the R1 license and continue the release. But it's also possible no one will. We'll just have to wait and see.

The only Geneon titles we're sure are continuing are Zero no Tsukaima and the first season of Nanoha. (heh)

10 First two seasons of Nanoha. ;p

11 That's good.

Sure those three series are going to be continued, but what about Karin?  I've watched The Familiar Of Zero before, but after the first season, the plot goes down QUICK.  So I ask those who may actually be a part of what is left of Geneon; you had more than five excellent series going on, why pick those three when you could of made money elsewise?

Although, even if Karin were to be continued, if the series did not have the same actors, then it may as well remain uncontinued.  Simply beacause of the excellent voice actors and twevle episodes of the anime are already made with the original actors voices.

13 I'm pretty sure that nobody from Geneon is reading my blog. (Or rather, if they were, shouldn't they say hi? ;p)

"Why pick those three when you could of made money elsewise?"

You've more or less put your finger on the exact problem. If Geneon was a profitable enterprise, it wouldn't have been sunk by its parent company, at least not in this fashion. Fact is, though, it wasn't. You can speculate whether it was due to high costs (contract work ain't cheap) or low sales (heh) or exorbitant bids for marginal series (heh heh), but it's not like they closed down a mint here.

14 I hope you don't mind but...I'm hearing alot of people wanting Geneon to turn to Kadokawa USA for distributing help. Would it be okay if we suggested that? I'm sorry I asked.

Posted by: FireChick at November 06, 2007 03:41 PM (YM4SF)

15 You can suggest it, but I don't see how it will affect anything.

Posted by: Steven Den Beste at November 06, 2007 04:20 PM (+rSRq)

16 Kadokawa USA has no US distribution in the first place, so how can they help Geneon? ;p

Essentially, Dentsu has decided that they want Geneon USA to be like Kadokawa USA - a company that's a licensing front and works with other US companies to do the actual dirty work of the release. Teaming up with ADV would have allowed Geneon to do this. I can speculate as to why the deal fell apart, but I don't actually know; I do know that there's some delicious irony in how this came to pass, and will leave it at that.

Fact is, there just aren't many options for distribution. ADV, Funimation, Bandai, maybe Media Blasters, everyone else is just too small to consider; it's a list of potential competitors, not business partners. It's just a question of whether those companies think they can get a better deal by partnering with Geneon USA early, or by letting them die on the vine and plucking individual titles off later, MB-license-rescue style.

17 It was actually Bandai that released Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu for Kadokawa. Kadokawa released The Third through RightStuf. Their model seems to be to find partners on a per-title basis, at least so far, and they haven't released all that many in any case.

18 Hey why did they cancel  Shonen Onmyoji  they should fished it before it cancel and if they planning not to released the third dvd and knowing what that they might give up on the anime they are releaseing because that i wase my time to go get that anime that they going to released and intil later they cancel it ahhhhhhhhh anyway i hope they realesed it!! let me know soon bye!

19 It would have cost too much and taken too long for them to finish all the series they have in progress, so they're cutting them off part way.

Posted by: Steven Den Beste at December 14, 2007 11:17 PM (+rSRq)

20 Again, we don't know that. They're definitely putting series into production that hadn't even started when everything came apart, and they're continuing work on at least one or two of the ongoing projects too, so it's too early to conclude that the rest of them have gotten the ax. Not everyone in the industry talks to each other, after all...

Of course, maybe it did. It's entirely possible that Geneon's contracts demanded that they finish certain shows but not others, or that they were able to negotiate their way out of certain contracts but not others, or that they prioritized certain shows over others. Or another company could be coming in to cherry-pick certain titles, but not others. No data from this end, they've told me nothing.

If they were all good sellers, Geneon wouldn't have been shut down the way they were; it's safe to assume that at least some of the shows they were working on were losers. Dunno if Onmyoji was one of them, but it's not beyond belief.

21 I really LOVE Shounen Onmyouji! I hope Geneon gets better soon (Distribution-wise). I shall still support them! If only I had more money I could finish titles like Rozen Maiden Traumend, Bottle Fairy, Sugar the Snow Fairy, vice versa.

Posted by: FireChick at December 17, 2007 05:45 PM (YM4SF)

22 This may be a little weird but may I make a suggestion? I think you should go to Bandai Entertainment for help. I mean, Bandai's been on a roll the past 2007 with titles like Haruhi, Lucky Star, Code Geass, etc. Maybe they can help you out? Course this is just MY opinion. Sorry if I'm being stupid here.

23 I'm actually subtitling Aika and Lucky Star for them now, since you ask. ;p

As far as Geneon and what they're going to end up doing, that's up to them. I don't have any contact with 'em.

Posted by: Avatar_exADV at January 10, 2008 05:28 PM (LMDdY)

24 Oh? Subtitling is being done for Lucky Star? Cool! I love Lucky Star!
